Op Selamat 5: Penang Accident Cases Drop By 22.7 Percent

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The number of accidents during Op Selamat 5 from July 21-Aug 4 showed a 22.7 percent drop compared to Op Selamat 3 during the Aidilfitri festive season last year in Penang.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the number of accidents during the period dropped by 340 cases compared to 1,498 recorded during Op Selamat 3.

"Op Selamat 5 showed a positive development because the number of accidents dropped by 22.7 percent. However, during the same period the number of fatal accidents went up by one case compared to only 10 cases in Op Selamat 3," he told reporters after the Penang Police Well-Being Convoy Tour programme here Thursday.

During Op Selamat 5, police worked with 10 enforcement agencies in the state including Land Public Transport Commission, Road Transport Department, Road Safety Department and the Department of Environment in monitoring the traffic.
